MITEC LAUNCHES ITS LATEST ESG INITIATIVE – A FABRIC RECYCLING CAMPAIGN IN EFFORTS TO TACKLE FABRIC WASTE

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 October 2023 – Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) unveiled its latest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiative – the Fabric Recycling Campaign, a collaborative effort with Kloth Cares on 6th October 2023. Curated under MITEC’s ESG programme, #myWorld, the Fabric Recycling Campaign was launched in conjunction with the prestigious CIMB Artober Art & Soul 2023 and CIMB Artober Fashion Week 2023 held at MITEC from 5th to 8th October.

#myWorld is MITEC’s unwavering pledge to create a profound and lasting impact for a sustainable future. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), #myWorld forms the bedrock of our mission – one that drives economic growth, fuels job creation, and uplifts our local communities. Through strategic partnerships with associations, corporations, academic institutions, and event organizers, MITEC is committed to shaping a brighter and more sustainable future for the business events landscape.

The partnership with Kloth Cares, the first textile-recycling movement in Southeast Asia, signifies MITEC’s inaugural stride towards fostering a circular economy. The collections garnered through the Fabric Recycling Campaign will undergo sorting at Kloth Cares’s recycling centre. High-quality fabric items are either exported or donated to charities, while the rest are upcycled or transformed into products like industrial wiping cloths and processed engineered fuel, a type of biofuel.

Inaugurating the Fabric Recycling Campaign were Ms Mala Dorasamy, CEO of MITEC; Ms Nik Susila Nik Hassan, Co-Founder of Kloth Cares; and Mr. Ismail Ani Arope, Director of CIMB Group Corporate Events and Group Branding and Communications, who personally officiated the campaign with heartfelt donations of preloved clothing.

“Our #myWorld commitment is not just a statement; it is a promise that guides our daily actions. We are not just attending or hosting events; we are creating them. We are not just shaping the business events landscape; we are defining it. As we weave this new fabric of change, let us remember that each thread represents a decision, a choice, and a step towards our long-term sustainability plan,” said Mala during the launch.

Notably, the fabric collection bin utilized for the campaign is exclusively crafted from eco-friendly cardboard. This sustainable approach extends to the entire #myWorld information booth and backdrop, serving as a resounding testament to MITEC’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices. The use of cardboard in crafting this event set up not only showcases our dedication to sustainability but also highlights the remarkable durability and recyclability of this material, affirming that impressive and eco-conscious designs go hand in hand.

The #myWorld Fabric Recycling Campaign proved to be a major attraction, drawing a diverse array of visitors, including Malaysia’s esteemed Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz during his visit to CIMB Artober on 8th October. The Minister also made a personal donation of preloved clothing, much to the delight of all in attendance, before signing the #myWorld Pledge Wall, further solidifying his support for this impactful sustainability initiative.
