MITEC strides towards a greener events landscape through innovative approaches. Going with LED screens to reduce waste (SDG12), plastic and PET recycling (SDG 13), a hydroponic garden supporting local sourcing (SDG12), and the Fabric Recycling Bin at CIMB Artober Fashion Week preventing landfill waste (SDG13). Embracing smart innovation, MITEC champions sustainability for a greener future.
Embracing Smart Innovation
MITEC underwent an extensive fit-out of LED banner screens, replacing traditional buntings. The LED screens offer several advantages, namely being environmentally-friendly and energy-saving due to its low energy consumption. These screens provide organisers with vibrant, attention-grabbing marketing opportunities while reducing the reliance on printed signages and branding.
Plastic and PET Recycling
Through a partnership with KLEAN, we launched MITEC’s KLEAN reverse vending machine in February. Since then, we have collected a total of 3246 PET containers and 2611 aluminum cans, which translates to over 830 kgs of CO2 footprints saved. The collections will be upcycled into new materials such as apparel, fibre for carpets, furniture filling, plastic furniture, pails and plastic boxes.
Redefining Sustainability in Culinary Excellence
In our efforts to minimise the carbon footprint of MITEC, we sought innovative solutions to shorten the food supply chain where possible in our centre. With this vision in mind, we set up a dedicated hydroponic herb and vegetable garden on site. Our culinary team oversees this garden, which is currently in the research and development phase wherein we are experimenting with planting and harvesting to guarantee a steady and sustainable source of select herbs and vegetables for the Garden Court Café.
Pre-loved Fabric Recycling
We partnered with Southeast Asia’s first textile-recycling movement Kloth Cares and launched the MITEC Fabric Recycling Bin during CIMB Artober Fashion Week 2023 held in MITEC. During the 3-day campaign, we collected 29 kg of recyclable pre-loved clothes from going into the landfill. This is equivalent to 3 days of avoiding the average greenhouse gas emissions of Malaysia or 1,791 black balloons filled with CO2! Collected high-quality fabric items will be either exported or donated to charities, while the rest will be upcycled or transformed into products such as industrial wiping cloths and biofuel.
